Over the past few weeks, we’ve been discussing American opinions on immigration. This is due in part to the fact that it is a commonly held notion that Americans are generally anti-immigration. Given the policies of the U.S. government, this sort of thinking is understandable. After all, U.S. immigration policy has become more and more anti-immigration as the years have gone on.
However, how the government acts is not at all the same as how Americans think. This isn’t just an opinion, however, but a fact. Many different polls –all of which were large scale, and done by reputable institutions like Pew and Gallup- have repeatedly shown that Americans, for the most part, are pro-immigration.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been doing reviews of this research to confer a message of hope for immigrants in America: you are welcome here. For instance, a poll done by Gallup has shown that about 75% of Americans believe that immigration is a good thing.
That is, the majority of Americans –including the majority of Republicans, surprisingly enough– believe that immigration is a positive force in America. This is just with immigration as a whole. When we speak of legal immigration, about 85% of Americans believe it is a good thing.
Likewise, fewer and fewer Americans believe immigration is something that should be decreased. According to the same study, about 29% of Americans have actively believed that immigration is something that needs to be decreased. What exactly does this mean?
The American public is in disagreement with the American government. This includes republicans. Hence, there is quite a bit of doubt around the idea now that Trump was elected for his immigration policies. When the vast majority of Americans –republicans and democrats alike– disagree with such policies, it seems quite doubtful that such policies did Trump any legitimate favors.
According to this study, the trend has been that Americans, as the years go by, become more and more in favor of immigration. Hence, one hopes that the government, sooner rather than later, begins to reflect the opinions of the American populace.
